Bianca Vanessa Andreescu is winning again. In Queretaro the Canadian beat Germany's Tatjana Maria 6-1 2-6 6-3 in the final of the WTA 125 on Mexican clay. It is her second title at this level in a matter of weeks, after the one in Rovereto.
The win is worth 160 points and lifts her to No. 109 in the WTA rankings with 697 points. Since 9 September 2026 Andreescu has climbed 74 places. Lisa Pigato (No. 108) is just ahead with 2 more points, and Mccartney Kessler (No. 110) is behind with 8 fewer: the top 100 is within reach.
The final had three faces. Andreescu opened with a clean 6-1, Maria answered with a 6-2 in the second set and levelled the match. In the third the Canadian took charge of the rallies again and closed it out 6-3 to take the trophy.
Andreescu's run, in the site's draw, starts in the round of 16, where she beat Italy's Diletta Cherubini 6-2 6-3. In the quarter-finals she gave Spain's Alicia Herrero Linana no chance, winning 6-1 6-1. In the semi-finals she got past France's Carole Monnet 6-3 7-5. Before the final she had not dropped a single set.
Maria also built her week with patience. In the round of 16 she eliminated Italy's Martina Colmegna 6-1 7-6(5), then Valeriya Strakhova 7-6(2) 6-3 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals she came from behind against France's Fiona Ferro, 7-5 3-6 6-1. At 39, having turned that age on 8 August, the German remains one of the most solid players on tour.
Maria's season has been rich. She won the WTA 125 in Newport and reached the final in Eastbourne, which earned her 163 points. She then made the second round at Wimbledon, Cincinnati and the US Open, where she beat Jelena Ostapenko 4-6 6-1 6-2 before losing to Nikola Bartunkova 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3. She is now No. 66 with 996 points, 14 places higher than on 11 August.
For Andreescu the Queretaro week confirms a very good spell. Just before, she had won the WTA 125 in Rovereto on indoor hard court, beating Dominika Salkova 7-6(2) 6-2 in the final. Along the way she had beaten Mia Ristic, Antonia Ruzic, Lucrezia Stefanini and Lucie Havlickova. In her last ten matches she has nine wins and a single loss.
That loss came in the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 in Samsun, against Anna Blinkova, 6-3 6-4. Shortly before, in Guadalajara, a WTA 500, she had gone out in the first round. So 2026 tells a story of ups and downs, but also clear growth at the 125 level, where two titles worth 160 points each have changed her ranking.
A comparison with past seasons shows how big the recovery is. In Grand Slam, WTA 1000, 500 and 250 events between 2021 and 2025, Andreescu played 93 matches, won 52 (56%) and reached one final without winning a title. In 2025 her record was 7 wins and 8 losses. Her most-played rivalries include Elena Rybakina (1-3), Jasmine Paolini (0-3) and Maria Sakkari (2-1).
The Queretaro Open, a WTA 125 on clay, had an intense week. The draw had 26 players from 16 nations, with France the best represented (5 players) and two French players reaching the semi-finals. 25 matches were played: 7 tie-breaks, 9 matches decided in a third set and 4 sets finished 6-0. There were no retirements.
The longest match of the tournament was Herrero Linana against Tamara Zidansek in the round of 16: 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(3), 34 games in total. The Slovenian had opened by beating Katrina Scott 6-1 6-2. That marathon carried Herrero Linana to the quarter-finals, where she met Andreescu.
On the roll of honour Andreescu's name joins that of Sara Bejlek, the 2025 champion who beat Katrina Scott 6-2 6-1. The points on offer were 160 for the champion, 97 for the runner-up, 59 for the semi-finalists, 37 for the quarter-finalists and 17 for those reaching the round of 16.
For Maria too the final leaves a valuable haul: 97 points that keep her at No. 66, ahead of Zeynep Sonmez (No. 67, 9 points fewer) and just behind Caty McNally (No. 65, 3 points more). From here on, every small result can move her by more than one place.
What happens now? The tour does not stop. The Cali Open, another WTA 125, has been under way since 2 November. Andreescu is in the draw and meets Zidansek in the first round. In 2025 the title went to Sinja Kraus, who collected 160 points.
For Andreescu it will be a test of consistency, because carrying form from one week to the next is the hardest part. For fans, meanwhile, it is the story of a player who has regained confidence starting from the bottom, one tournament at a time. The rankings will soon tell whether the top 100 is really within reach.
