Diana Shnaider has won the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. In the final the Russian beat Canada's Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4 5-7 6-2, after a three-set match on the Japanese hard courts. The tournament is a WTA 500 that began on 26 October 2026, and the title is worth 500 ranking points.

For Shnaider this is the high point of an Asian autumn that began with a few regrets. In the previous weeks she had lost the Ningbo semifinal to Elena Rybakina (6-3 7-5) and the Wuhan quarterfinal to Jelena Ostapenko (7-6(6) 6-1). In Tokyo she shifted gear just as the draw was narrowing.

The live rankings show the jump clearly. Shnaider is world No. 11 with 3,298 points, 500 of them earned this very week. Ahead of her is Marta Kostyuk, No. 10, with 677 points more; behind her is Maja Chwalinska, No. 12, with 282 fewer. Compared with 3 August 2026 the Russian has gained four places.

The road to the final was anything but easy. Shnaider began in the round of 16 and got past Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 5-7 6-3, after dropping the second set. It was a sign of a tournament to be played on a knife-edge, and that is how it went.

The toughest test came in the quarterfinals. Against the Philippines' Alexandra Eala, Shnaider lost the first set 2-6, won the second in a tie-break (7-6(5)) and closed out the third 6-4. It was a comeback that says a lot about the mental strength of a player who, at 22, already won five titles on the main tour between 2023 and 2025.

In the semifinal it was Mia Pohankova's turn, beaten 6-4 7-6(7). Here too the second set was decided by a tight tie-break, won 9-7. Shnaider showed she can handle the big points, which at this level so often make the difference between a title and a lost final.

On the other side of the net, Leylah Annie Fernandez went through the draw with a single tie-break to settle. She beat Himeno Sakatsume 6-2 6-4 in her opener, then Elise Mertens 6-2 7-6(8) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals she advanced through Elena Rybakina's walkover, and in the semifinal she beat Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5 6-3.

Still, it is a week to frame for the Canadian, because the final is worth 325 points. Fernandez is now No. 20 with 2,299 points, behind Naomi Osaka (No. 19, 43 points more) and ahead of Belinda Bencic (No. 21, 77 fewer). Since 3 August 2026 she has climbed eleven places.

The final was a real arm wrestle. Shnaider took the first set 6-4, Fernandez answered 7-5 in the second and levelled the match. In the third set the Russian changed pace and closed it out 6-2 to take the title.

The head-to-head said this would be an even contest, and the count now stands level at 2-2. Fernandez had won in 2024 in the Cincinnati round of 16 (6-1 6-4) and in the Wuhan first round (6-7(7) 6-3 6-3). Shnaider had won, also in 2024, in the Hong Kong semifinal (6-4 6-2). The Russian has now won the last two meetings in a row.

The comparison between their seasons is interesting. In 2025 Shnaider finished with 27 wins, 25 losses and one title, while Fernandez finished with 30 wins, 23 losses and two titles. Over their last ten matches both are 8-2: in short, their form is the same.

Fernandez, who is 24, had already won the Singapore WTA 500 in 2026 and lost the Ningbo final to Rybakina 6-2 6-2. Tokyo is her second lost final in a row at 500 level, but also proof that the Canadian is back competing with the best. Between 2021 and 2025 she won five titles and played seven finals.

The Tokyo tournament also has an identity all its own. The draw had 28 players from 19 nations, with Australia the most represented country (four players). Twenty-six matches were played: nine went to a deciding set, there were nine tie-breaks in all, no retirements and a single walkover.

The longest match of the week was Kamilla Rakhimova against Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16: 6-4 4-6 7-6(5), 33 games in total. Two sets ended 6-0. It was a week of long rallies and steady nerves.

The list of past champions shows how open this event is. In 2025 Belinda Bencic won, beating Linda Noskova 6-2 6-3 in the final. Before her came Qinwen Zheng in 2024, Veronika Kudermetova in 2023 and Liudmila Samsonova in 2022. Shnaider joins a list of different champions every year.

One last note on points: in 2025 Shnaider went out in the round of 16 in Tokyo, earning 55 points. This year she takes home 500, and the difference shows in the rankings, where the Russian is now No. 11.

What remains to be seen is how much this success will weigh on the rest of the season. Shnaider is winning again and has a ranking that lets her aim higher; Fernandez, a finalist in Ningbo and Tokyo, has everything she needs to finish the year with an even richer record. Their head-to-head, meanwhile, is perfectly level.
