Lorenzo Musetti has won the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in Lyon, an ATP 250 event on indoor hard courts, beating Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 in the final. According to Ubitennis, the match lasted an hour and 22 minutes. It was a clear-cut final against an opponent who had not dropped a single set all week.

It is the third ATP title of Musetti's career and his first in more than four years: the last one came in October 2022 in Naples, in a final against Matteo Berrettini. In between came a long run of lost finals. In the 2024 and 2025 seasons alone, in the main-tour events tracked by this site, the Italian played six finals and won none of them.

The title also matters in the rankings. Before the final, the live rankings had Musetti at No.26 with 2,035 points, already including the 165 guaranteed by reaching the final. The title is worth 250, so 85 more: the Italian moves up to 2,120 points, passes Karen Khachanov (2,040) and Casper Ruud (2,095) and climbs to No.24 in the live rankings. Just ahead of him is Luciano Darderi, on 2,185.

For Fritz the defeat changes little in the rankings. The American stays on 3,045 points, at No.13 in the live rankings, 45 points behind Novak Djokovic. He still leaves Lyon with the 165 points for reaching the final.

Musetti's path was anything but smooth. In his opening match he beat compatriot Matteo Arnaldi 6-1 6-4, then saw off young Frenchman Moïse Kouamé 6-4 6-4. In the quarter-finals against Luca Van Assche he needed a third set: 7-6 6-7 6-4, after losing the second-set tie-break 9-7.

The turning point was the semi-final against Flavio Cobolli, the tournament's top seed. Musetti lost the first set 4-6, dominated the second 6-2 and took the third 7-5 after saving four match points, as reported by the ATP website. An all-Italian clash that changed his week.

Fritz, the second seed, had reached the final without wasting energy. After a first-round bye he beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2 7-5, Daniel Altmaier 7-6 6-2 and, in the semi-finals, fellow American Tommy Paul 6-3 7-5. Three matches, six sets won, none lost: on paper, he was the favourite.

In the final, though, the script was turned upside down. Musetti took the first set 6-3, then closed out the second 6-4 without giving Fritz a chance to extend the match. For a player who had stopped at the last hurdle so often in recent seasons, a final won in straight sets is news in itself.

The match also changes their head-to-head record. In the meetings recorded by this site (Grand Slams, Masters 1000, ATP 500 and 250), Musetti led 2-1: Fritz won in the first round of Wimbledon 2022, while the Italian took their Wimbledon 2024 quarter-final in five sets and their second-round match at Monte-Carlo 2024 6-4 6-4. With Lyon, the count rises to 3-1.

Lyon comes after a difficult summer. Since 27 July Musetti had dropped 11 places in the rankings. His best result of the summer was a quarter-final in Cincinnati, followed by second-round defeats at the US Open against Dane Sweeny and in Shanghai against Yi Zhou.

His 2025, for that matter, had been a year of great consistency but no trophies: 44 wins and 20 losses on the main tour, three finals, no titles. 2024 had ended with 30 wins, 26 losses and three more lost finals. The Lyon title breaks exactly that streak.

Fritz, on the other hand, is a player used to winning finals. Between 2021 and 2025, in the events tracked by this site, he played ten and won six. His 2025 ended with 44 wins, 19 losses and two titles: top-10 numbers, which explain why he started as the favourite in Lyon.

It was a busy week for Italian tennis. There were five Italians in the draw: besides Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Berrettini. Sonego lost to Kouamé 7-6 6-4, Berrettini to Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet 7-6 7-5. Musetti played four of his five matches against a compatriot or a home Frenchman, and won them all.

The tournament was very evenly matched. Before the final, 26 matches had been played, with 16 tie-breaks and 12 matches going the distance. The draw featured 28 players from 12 countries, with France leading the way on ten. The longest match was between Daniel Altmaier and Titouan Droguet: 38 games, ending 5-7 7-6 7-6.

Now comes the hard part: backing it up. Over the next six weeks Musetti has 215 points to defend: 50 from the third round of the 2025 Paris Masters and 165 from last year's final in Athens. With the Lyon title he faces that part of the season with a bit more breathing room and, above all, with the confidence of a player who has started winning again.

Fritz, for his part, has 100 points to defend over the same period. The Lyon final still gives him useful points and confirms solid form: three matches without dropping a set before the final. For Musetti, though, there is only one headline: after four years and a long run of finals that slipped away, the trophy is finally his.
