Damir Dzumhur has won the 2026 Olbia Challenger. In the final the Bosnian beat Britain's Jacob Fearnley 7-6(4) 6-3 to take the Sardinian Challenger 125 title: five matches played, five wins, and no set dropped in the final.

For the rankings, it is a big boost. Before the tournament Dzumhur was No. 103 in the ATP rankings; after the final he rose to No. 83, twenty places in a single week. A Challenger 125 title is worth 125 points, the maximum on offer in Olbia, and it puts him back among the top hundred.

The Bosnian was born on 20 May 1992 and is 34 years old. That is not the age at which players usually climb the rankings in giant strides, but his autumn tells a different story. After the trophy Dzumhur did not stop: in Brussels he is already in the last 16.

His Sardinian run began against Aziz Dougaz, beaten 6-3 2-6 6-3 in the opener. Not a stroll, but a win in three sets, and sometimes that is all it takes to get a tournament going.

The real scare came in the round of 16 against Dimitar Kuzmanov. Dzumhur lost the first set 6-0, saved the second in a tie-break (7-6(7)) and dominated the third 6-0. A 0-6 7-6 6-0 scoreline says a lot about the veteran's character: after a set to forget, he gave his rival zero games in the last one.

The quarter-final was simpler: 6-0 6-3 against Tom Gentzsch, who had knocked out Georgii Kravchenko 6-3 3-6 6-4. In the semi-final Maks Kasnikowski, who had beaten Stefano Travaglia 6-2 7-5 in the quarters, went down 6-1 7-5.

The final brought Fearnley, No. 87 in the rankings and nine years younger (25.3 against Dzumhur's 34.4). The Briton had beaten Luca Nardi 6-2 6-4 in the semi-final, after seeing off Maxim Mrva 6-0 7-6(4) in the quarters. The first set was settled in a tie-break, won by Dzumhur 7-4; the second went to Dzumhur 6-3.

The recent head-to-head is one-sided: Dzumhur leads 2-0. The first win came at the 2025 Hellenic Championship in Athens, a 250, with a clean 6-4 6-2 in the third round; the second is this Olbia final.

The tournament, a Challenger 125 that began on 12 October, had a draw of 31 players from 20 nations, with Italy the most represented country (six players). The best Italian result was Nardi's semi-final. In all, 30 matches were played, with 9 tie-breaks, 7 matches going to a deciding set and 2 retirements.

The longest match of the week was Kravchenko against Laurent Lokoli, 6-7(4) 7-5 7-6(1), 38 games in total. On the honour roll Dzumhur picks up the baton from Luca Van Assche, who in 2025 beat Pablo Carreno-Busta 7-6(5) 6-7(1) 6-2.

Dzumhur's 2026 season has been up and down so far. He reached the final of the Croatia Open in Umag, a 250, worth 165 points; then he met Hubert Hurkacz in the first round of the US Open and lost 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-1. In Porto, at the Challenger 125, he was stopped in the third round by Moez Echargui (7-5 6-0), and in Villena, at the Challenger 100, by Abedallah Shelbayh in the round of 16 (7-5 3-6 6-3).

In 2025, at the main-tour events followed by the site, his record was 18 wins and 26 losses, with no titles. In his last 10 matches, though, he has won 7 and lost 3. Those are the numbers of a player whose form is coming back, and the Olbia title is its high point.

There was no time to celebrate. At the European Open in Brussels, an indoor 250 that began on 19 October, Dzumhur beat Croatia's Dino Prizmic, No. 95 and 21 years old, 7-6(5) 2-6 6-2. It was the first meeting between the two.

Today, in the last 16, he faces Zizou Bergs, No. 41 in the world and a home favourite: the Belgian is 27 and finished 2025 with a 26-24 record. In Shanghai he knocked out Carlos Alcaraz 7-5 7-6(4) in the third round, before being stopped by Tommy Paul (7-6(5) 6-4) in the last 16. In Brussels he got past Toby Samuel 6-3 7-6(3). Dzumhur and Bergs have no previous meetings.

Points are at stake too. Dzumhur is No. 80 in the live rankings with 737 points. If he beats Bergs he moves to 762 points, and the theoretical maximum, with the title, would be 962. Around him the rankings are a tight cluster: Zachary Svajda has 759, Kamil Majchrzak 750, Alex Molcan 734, Sebastian Korda 730.

The Brussels tournament has a weighty honour roll: Felix Auger Aliassime won in 2025 over Jiri Lehecka (7-6(2) 6-7(6) 6-2), Roberto Bautista Agut in 2024, Alexander Bublik over Arthur Fils in 2023 and Auger Aliassime again in 2022. This year Fils, Francisco Cerundolo, Tallon Griekspoor, Clement Chidekh and Jan-Lennard Struff have already reached the quarter-finals.

What happens now? Dzumhur has few points to defend over the next six weeks: 50 in all, 25 from the 2025 Paris Masters 1000 and 25 from Athens. That lets him play freely, and think about a strong end to the season. At 34 his passport says veteran; the rankings say golden autumn.
