Alexandra Eala has come through the most uncomfortable match of her tournament and is now in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. In the round of 16 the Filipina beat Australia's Talia Gibson 4-6 6-2 6-0: after losing the opening set, she won twelve of the next fourteen games and finished with a set that left no way back.
In the quarterfinals she meets Diana Shnaider, world No. 13. It is the same player who stopped her in the round of 16 in Ningbo a week ago, so the match already feels like a rematch. Sometimes the draw has a sense of humor.
The rankings are worth a look, because the margin is thin. On the site's player page Eala is No. 19 with 2,296 live points, 55 more than at the start of the tournament. Ahead of her are Amanda Anisimova (No. 17, 2,363 points, 67 clear) and Naomi Osaka (No. 18, 2,342, +46). Behind, Belinda Bencic (No. 20) is 74 points adrift. Eala's career high is No. 18, reached on 24 August 2026.
The Gibson match was a comeback in the fullest sense. The Australian took the first set 6-4, then Eala shifted gears: 6-2 in the second and a 6-0 third, one of only two sets finished at love in the whole Tokyo draw. The other was signed by Gibson herself, in the first set against Daria Kasatkina.
Gibson was not an opponent to underestimate. According to the site's rankings she started out at No. 36 with 1,361 points, having climbed 36 places since 3 August. In Tokyo she opened by beating Kasatkina 6-0 7-5. In Singapore, on indoor hard courts, she reached the final by beating, among others, Maria Sakkari 6-1 4-6 6-2, before losing to Leylah Annie Fernandez 7-5 6-0.
For Eala it is also an answer after a mixed autumn. In Singapore she went out in the round of 16 against Tatiana Prozorova (4-6 7-5 6-3), in Wuhan in the second round against Han Shi (4-6 6-3 6-3), in Ningbo in the round of 16 against Shnaider. Over her last ten matches the record, again according to the player page, is five wins and five losses. In Tokyo, though, she has already won two matches: in the opener she beat British wild card Mika Stojsavljevic 6-1 6-2 in 75 minutes as the No. 8 seed.
Still, 2026 has had real highlights. She won the title in Washington, a WTA 500 worth 500 points, and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon (240 points), Toronto and Cincinnati (120 points each). In Cincinnati she lost to Anisimova 4-6 6-4 6-2; at the US Open she stopped in the third round against Iva Jovic, 7-5 3-6 7-5. In her last 30 matches she has won 17 and lost 13.
Shnaider arrives in solid form. She is No. 13, also her career high, set on 14 September 2026, and holds 2,903 live points, 105 more than at the start of the tournament. She has won seven of her last ten matches. In the round of 16 she beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 5-7 6-3, dropping a set along the way.
The Russian has had a big autumn: a semifinal in Ningbo, where she beat Putintseva 7-5 7-6(4), Jovic 6-3 4-6 6-1 and Eala 7-5 6-4 before losing to Elena Rybakina 6-3 7-5, and a quarterfinal in Wuhan, where Jelena Ostapenko stopped her 7-6(6) 6-1. In 2025 she won the title in Monterrey, a 500 event.
The head-to-head with Eala has a single entry, and it is fresh. In Ningbo Shnaider won 7-5 6-4, converting her seventh match point after one hour and 55 minutes, as the WTA reported. It was their first meeting at professional level: the only junior meeting, in Osaka in 2019, went to Eala 6-1 6-3. On our head-to-head page the record is therefore 1-0 to the Russian.
It was a match of constant breaks. From 4-4 in the first set, eight of the following nine games were breaks, and Eala was the first to drop serve, with a forehand sent wide. The first-set numbers favored Shnaider: 16 winners to 13 and only seven unforced errors against the Filipina's 11.
There is also a technical angle, because two left-handers are facing each other, two of the three highest-ranked on tour. Shnaider explained the difficulty of the matchup: "You expect the slice serve into the body, definitely a little more variation and a different type of ball strike." She added that it takes the first few games to get used to the spin and to work out strengths and weaknesses. She said it in her on-court interview after the Ningbo match.
Against fellow left-handers the numbers say Shnaider copes better: at tour level she is 11-9 in those matches, while Eala is 1-4. It is not a verdict, but it is a sign the Filipina will need to find answers early, perhaps in the first few games.
The tournament, meanwhile, has lost some of its leading names. The WTA reported that No. 2 seed Maja Chwalinska and No. 4 seed Bencic, the defending champion, withdrew. Bencic beat Linda Noskova 6-2 6-3 in the 2025 final; before her, Qinwen Zheng won in 2024, Veronika Kudermetova in 2023 and Liudmila Samsonova in 2022. A new champion is therefore guaranteed.
In the other quarterfinal, Kamilla Rakhimova plays Maya Joint. Rakhimova eliminated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4 4-6 7-6(5), the longest match of the tournament at 33 games, while Joint beat Cristina Bucsa 6-1 2-6 6-4. The site's order of play still lists the round-of-16 matches Alycia Parks against Kimberly Birrell, Leylah Annie Fernandez against Elise Mertens, Naomi Osaka against Mia Pohankova, and Elena Rybakina against Yulia Putintseva.
There is far more at stake than pride. In Tokyo the title is worth 500 points, the final 325, the semifinal 195 and the quarterfinal 105. For someone like Eala, fighting for a spot between No. 17 and No. 20, every extra round can shift the balance considerably. The tournament began on 26 October with 26 players from 19 nations.
Now the Filipina has about a day to recover and prepare the rematch. The question is simple: can the Eala who wiped out Gibson with a 6-0 set bring the same clarity against a left-hander who beat her in Ningbo after seven match points? We will find out in the quarterfinals.
