Basel: Kym beats Shelton to reach the quarters, Struff stops Djokovic
The only Swiss player left in the draw at the Swiss Indoors Basel is called Jerome Kym, and he is ranked No. 190 in the world. In the round of 16 of his home ATP 500, he beat Ben Shelton, the world No. 4, 6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(1). It is the result that made the most noise on the tournament's day.
On paper the gap was huge. Shelton arrived in Basel with 4,730 points, Kym with 303. The 23-year-old local was born on 12 February 2003, and his career-high ranking is No. 178 from 9 September 2026. In the seasons tracked by the site, across Slams, Masters 1000, ATP 500 and 250 events, his record is 4 wins and 3 losses.
The match had three very distinct acts. Kym took the first set 6-3. Shelton answered by winning the second in a tie-break, 7-4 in his favour. The third set went to a tie-break as well, and this time the Swiss left the American a single point, closing it 7-1 after the 7-6 set.
The two men's paths so far had been different, but equally tough. In the previous round Kym had beaten Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(1) 6-4. Shelton had got past Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 7-6(4): that match, 39 games, is still the longest of the whole tournament according to the site's results page.
For Shelton it is a setback after a high-level year. He has been world No. 4, his career high, since 14 September 2026, and at the 2026 US Open he reached the final, losing to Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2. In Basel he also had a final behind him, the 2024 one lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4 7-6(4). This time he stops in the last 16, worth 50 points.
For Kym it confirms a rising form. In his last 15 matches he has won 10 and lost 5, a balance of +5. In Roanne, at the indoor Challenger 100, he had stopped in the semi-final against Mika Brunold, 7-6(2) 7-6(3). Soon after he beat a top 5 player. He had dropped 44 places since 9 September, so this tournament also helps him regain ground.
In 2025 his record on the main tour was 4 wins and 2 losses: 2-1 on hard courts and 2-1 on clay. His best-known earlier match is the 2025 US Open, where he lost in the third round to Taylor Fritz 7-6(3) 6-7(9) 6-4 6-4. Against Shelton, instead, he finished the match in three sets, not four.
Now Jiri Lehecka awaits, the world No. 19 with 2,375 points. The Czech beat Stan Wawrinka 7-5 7-6(2) and then Daniel Altmaier 7-5 6-4, without dropping a set. His career high is No. 12 from 13 July 2026 and, in the seasons tracked by the site, he has two titles and six finals. The time of the quarter-final with Kym is still to be decided.
In the same hours the draw produced another upset. Jan-Lennard Struff eliminated Novak Djokovic 6-7(4) 7-5 7-6(5): first set lost in a tie-break, second won 7-5, third again decided by a tie-break. Djokovic had reached the last 16 by beating Ugo Humbert 4-6 6-3 6-4. For the German it is the kind of win that stays in a career's record.
Struff is 36 and sits at No. 43 with 1,184 points. His best ranking of the season is No. 41 from 13 July 2026. He arrives in Basel after the Brussels final, lost to Tallon Griekspoor 4-6 6-3 6-4, where he had beaten Zizou Bergs 6-3 7-6(6) and Arthur Fils 6-4 6-7(7) 7-6(5). In his last 10 matches he has 7 wins and 3 losses.
On Friday 30 October Struff plays Nuno Borges at 18:00. The Portuguese beat Mika Brunold 6-3 6-1 and then Casper Ruud 1-6 6-3 6-4, coming back after clearly losing the first set. It promises to be a balanced match: Borges knows how to win from behind, and Struff has just shown he can handle tie-breaks.
The rest of the quarter-finals. At 14:00 Holger Rune faces Valentin Vacherot: the Dane beat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-3 7-6(7), while Vacherot got past Rafael Jodar 7-6(4) 2-6 7-6(5). At 15:30 Taylor Fritz meets Arthur Fils: Fritz eliminated Denis Shapovalov 6-4 6-3, and Fils beat Alex Michelsen 4-6 6-3 7-6(5).
The tournament's numbers describe a tight week. So far 24 matches played, 20 tie-breaks, 13 matches that went to a deciding set, no set finishing 6-0 and no retirements. Six of the eight last-16 matches went to a third set: only Lehecka and Fritz finished in two.
The roll of honour says the title is wide open. In 2025 Joao Fonseca won, beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3 6-4. In 2024 it was Mpetshi Perricard over Shelton, in 2023 Felix Auger Aliassime over Hurkacz 7-6(3) 7-6(5), and in 2022 Auger Aliassime again, over Rune, 6-3 7-5. Rune, a finalist in 2022, is back among the last eight.
Eight quarter-finals and eight different nations: Switzerland, France, the United States, Germany, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Monaco and Portugal. Switzerland started with five players in the draw and one is left, Kym. For the tournament, with the home crowd behind him, it is the ending everyone wants.
What happens now? The points on offer are clear: 500 for the title, 330 for the final, 200 for the semi-final, 100 for the quarter-finals. For Kym, who has 303 points today, a semi-final would be worth almost two thirds of his entire current ranking total. On Friday we find out whether the Basel fairy tale has another chapter.
