Paris QFs: Alcaraz faces Fritz, 3-0 in their meetings

On Friday the Masters 1000 in Paris enters its decisive phase: the Rolex Paris Masters schedules all four quarter-finals, and the main event comes in the evening. According to the site's order of play, at 19:00 Taylor Fritz meets Carlos Alcaraz on the indoor hard court at Bercy. The Spaniard has won all three previous meetings, but the American arrives off a clean 6-3 6-4 win over Arthur Fils.

The full programme is packed. At 14:00 Ben Shelton plays Tommy Paul in an all-American derby. At 15:30 Luca Van Assche, the last Frenchman left, faces Rinky Hijikata, the Australian who has already knocked out Novak Djokovic. To close, at 20:30, Casper Ruud plays Nuno Borges.

Let's start with Alcaraz. The Spaniard is world No. 3 in the ATP rankings with 6,300 live points, 200 more than at the start of the tournament. Ahead of him are Jannik Sinner, No. 2 with 9,450, and Alexander Zverev, No. 1 with 9,560. Behind him is Shelton, No. 4, 1,670 points away. If he won in Paris, Alcaraz would climb to 7,100 points; a quarter-final win would take him to 6,500.

In Paris Alcaraz began in the second round against Alex Michelsen, beaten 7-6(4) 6-3. In the round of 16 he did not even have to step on court: Matteo Berrettini did not play and the site records the result as a walkover. Alcaraz therefore reaches the quarter-finals with few games in his legs, a detail that can matter after five days of tournament play.

His form, meanwhile, is excellent. Alcaraz won the Vienna title, beating Alex De Minaur 6-1 6-4 in the final after getting past Daniil Medvedev 6-4 7-6(2) in the semi-final and Paul 6-4 7-6(2) in the quarter-finals. Before that he had taken the Japan Open in Tokyo, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4) 6-4 in the final. In his last ten matches he has nine wins and a single defeat. This year he also reached the quarter-finals at the US Open.

The flip side is Shanghai: in the third round Alcaraz was stopped by Zizou Bergs, 7-5 7-6(4). A useful reminder: indoors is his weakest figure by win percentage, with 12 wins and 8 losses over 2021-2025. His overall record in the tournaments tracked by the site, from 2021 to 2025, is 211 wins and 48 losses, 81%, with 22 titles and 28 finals. In 2025 alone he finished 64-7 with eight trophies.

Now Fritz. The 29-year-old American is No. 10 with 3,295 live points, also 200 more than at the start of the tournament. Winning the quarter-final would lift him to 3,495, while the maximum possible, with the title, is 4,095. Ahead of him is De Minaur, No. 9, 125 points away; behind him Rafael Jodar, No. 11, is just 36 back. His best ranking remains No. 7, reached on 3 July 2026.

Fritz's path at Bercy has been anything but comfortable. In the first round he came back to beat Benjamin Bonzi, 3-6 6-3 6-4. In the second he played the longest match of the tournament, 38 games against Alex Molcan: 6-7(6) 7-5 7-6(5). In the round of 16 he shifted gear and eliminated Arthur Fils 6-3 6-4. Fils is a top-ten player, so the result carries weight.

Fritz's recent form has lights and shadows. In Basel he beat Denis Shapovalov 6-4 6-3, then Fils (6-2 2-0 after his opponent retired), before losing in the semi-final to Valentin Vacherot, 7-6(5) 6-3. In Lyon he reached the final after beating Paul in the semi-final 6-3 7-5, then lost to Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-4. In his last ten matches he has eight wins and two losses.

Now the head-to-head. Alcaraz leads 3-0, and the record says a lot about the weight of the matches played: in the 2023 Miami Open quarter-finals the Spaniard won 6-4 6-2; in the 2025 Wimbledon semi-final he prevailed 6-4 5-7 6-3 7-6(6); and in the 2025 Tokyo final he closed it out 6-4 6-4. In eight sets played, Fritz has won only one, the 7-5 in the second set at Wimbledon.

The meeting that matters most is the Wimbledon semi-final, the only time Fritz has taken a set off the Spaniard and the match went to a fourth-set tie-break, won 7-6(6) by Alcaraz. That is where Fritz will try to build his first win over him.

The tournament, meanwhile, has already delivered plenty of drama since it began on 2 November. After the round of 16 the site counts 47 matches played, with 27 tie-breaks and 16 matches going to a deciding set. There have been two retirements and one walkover, and only one set has finished 6-0: Borges took it against Ignacio Buse, in a 6-0 6-2 win in the round of 16.

Among the quarter-finals, the other American derby promises balance. Shelton eliminated Arthur Rinderknech 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) in the round of 16 after beating Cameron Norrie 6-3 6-4. Paul arrives from a 7-6(3) 6-4 win over Quentin Halys and a 7-5 6-4 win over Holger Rune in the first round.

Van Assche keeps home hopes alive: he beat Musetti 7-5 3-6 6-4 and is the last of the ten Frenchmen in the draw. His opponent, Hijikata, already eliminated Djokovic in the second round (2-6 6-3 6-3) and in the round of 16 got past Tomas Martin Etcheverry 2-6 6-3 7-5, turning around a lost first set.

Ruud and Borges complete the picture. The Norwegian dropped just six games against Jan-Lennard Struff (6-3 6-3), while the Portuguese gave up two against Buse. The quarter-finals are also interesting for geography: the United States has three players still in the running, while France, Spain and Australia have one each.

As for the numbers, the tournament has a prestigious roll of honour: in 2025 Sinner won against Felix Auger Aliassime, 6-4 7-6(4); in 2024 Zverev beat Ugo Humbert 6-2 6-2; in 2023 Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-3. This year the title will change hands anyway: Sinner, who was defending the 1,000 points from 2025, is not among the quarter-finalists.

What happens now? Whoever wins Friday's four quarter-finals earns a semi-final worth 400 points. For Alcaraz there is also the defence of No. 3, with Shelton fourth and still in the running; for Fritz the chance to close in on De Minaur, No. 9, and to win, for the first time, against the Spaniard. We will find out this evening.
