Paris semifinals: Van Assche meets Shelton, Alcaraz waits

Paris has its first semifinalist story, and it features a name nobody had on the list at the start of the week: Luca Van Assche. The Frenchman, world No. 34 in the live ranking with 1,505 points, plays Ben Shelton, No. 4 in the world, on Saturday 7 November at 14:30 at the Rolex Paris Masters. On the other side of the draw, Carlos Alcaraz is waiting to find out who he will face.

The jump in the rankings is the most striking number. Van Assche started the week at No. 47 with 1,105 points and now has 400 more: thirteen places gained in a single week. His best ranking in the site's history was No. 40, reached on 24 August 2026, and he is already above it.

His run tells of a week without shortcuts. In the first round he beat Mariano Navone 6-3 7-5, then Learner Tien 7-6(4) 6-4. In the last 16 he eliminated Lorenzo Musetti 7-5 3-6 6-4, avenging the loss in Lyon, where he had gone down 7-6(5) 6-7(7) 6-4 to the same Musetti in the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals against Rinky Hijikata he won 6-4 6-7(4) 7-5: he lost the second set in a tie-break, then took the third 7-5. With that win he became the last Frenchman standing in a draw that started with ten.

Van Assche's season has not been a straight line. He won the Estoril 250 and the Quebec City Challenger 125, but in the autumn he suffered some tough first-round exits: in Tokyo against Arthur Fils 6-3 6-2, in Shanghai against Bu Yunchaokete 7-6(3) 6-3, and in Vienna against Tien again, 6-3 6-1. In his last ten matches he has six wins and four losses.

Ben Shelton arrives with a different story. He is No. 4 with 4,930 points, 400 more than at the start of the tournament, and he built his semifinal in Paris with three wins: 6-3 6-4 over Cameron Norrie, 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) over Arthur Rinderknech and 6-4 4-6 6-3 over Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.

The win over Rinderknech, another Frenchman, was the toughest: Shelton lost the first set and won the deciding tie-break. Against Paul he dropped the second set, but regained control in the third and closed it out 6-3.

The American's 2026 has two major moments. In Montreal he won a Masters 1000, worth 1,000 points, and at the U.S. Open he reached the final, beating Alcaraz in the quarterfinals 6-7(5) 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6(7) before losing to Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2. His best ranking, No. 4, matches his current one.

There is no head-to-head history: according to the site's head-to-head page, Shelton and Van Assche have never met on the main tour, so it starts at 0-0. The gap in the rankings, however, is clear: 4,930 points against 1,505, fourth place against thirty-fourth.

On indoor hard courts, the surface at Bercy, the 2022-2025 numbers show 11 wins and 8 losses for Shelton, and 3 wins and 8 losses for Van Assche. These are statistics to read with caution, because the Frenchman has played far less at this level, but they explain why Shelton is the favourite.

There are heavy points at stake for the American. In 2025 he stopped in the quarterfinals in Paris and collected 200; now the semifinal already guarantees him 400. The tournament table awards 650 points to the final and 1,000 to the title.

On the other side is Alcaraz, No. 3 with 6,500 points. In the quarterfinals he beat Taylor Fritz 6-7(10) 7-5 6-3, coming back after losing the first set in a tie-break. Before that he had beaten Alex Michelsen 7-6(4) 6-3 and had moved into the quarterfinals when Matteo Berrettini withdrew, by walkover.

The Spaniard comes in with nine wins in his last ten matches. On 2 November he won the Vienna 500 by beating Alex De Minaur 6-1 6-4, after the Tokyo title. In the semifinal he will meet the winner of Casper Ruud versus Nuno Borges: in the last 16 Ruud beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 6-3, and Borges eliminated Ignacio Buse 6-0 6-2.

Paris also weighs on the race at the top. Zverev, No. 1 with 9,560 points, went out in the second round against Musetti 7-6(5) 6-2, and his lead over Jannik Sinner, No. 2 on 9,450, is 110 points. Sinner, the 2025 champion, sees the 1,000 points of that title expire with this edition.

The roll of honour shows how open this tournament is: in 2025 Sinner beat Felix Auger Aliassime 6-4 7-6(4), in 2024 Zverev defeated Ugo Humbert 6-2 6-2, in 2023 Novak Djokovic beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-3. In 2022 Holger Rune beat Djokovic 3-6 6-3 7-5, and in 2021 Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev 4-6 6-3 6-3.

The 2026 numbers confirm a hard-fought tournament: 56 players from 23 countries, 50 matches played, 29 tie-breaks, 19 matches that went to a third set and 2 retirements. The longest match remains Fritz-Molcan, 6-7(6) 7-5 7-6(5), over 38 games. Of France's ten players only Van Assche remains; the United States still have Shelton.

The schedule is now clear. On Saturday at 14:30 Van Assche and Shelton open the semifinals, then it is Alcaraz against the winner of Ruud-Borges. For Shelton a final would mean 650 points; for Van Assche it would confirm that his Paris week was no accident.
