Seoul: Atmane edges Wong in tie-breaks to win Challenger

Terence Atmane has won the Seoul Challenger 125. In the final the Frenchman beat Chak Lam Coleman Wong 7-6(3) 3-6 7-6(9), after three sets fought to the very last rally: the deciding tie-break ended 11-9 and the winning point came on his second match point.

It is Atmane's fifth Challenger title, according to Tennis Majors, and all five have come in Asia. He had not lifted a trophy for about a year and a half, since Guangzhou, and the Korean week follows a quarter-final run at the Almaty 250.

Why does it matter? First of all, the points: the Seoul Challenger 125 awards 125 to the champion, and on Atmane's season sheet it is the biggest haul of 2026. For comparison, the round of 16 at the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters 1000 events earned him 100 points each. Then the ranking: before the final he was No. 90 according to SBS, today the site lists him at No. 74 with 787 points, 14 behind Pablo Carreno-Busta and 6 behind Rinky Hijikata.

The path started uphill. In the first round Atmane lost the opening set to Koki Matsuda, 4-6, then shifted gear with 6-1 6-2. In the round of 16 he beat Taro Daniel 7-5 6-4, and in the semi-final he handled Billy Harris with a clean 6-3 6-1. Up to the final he dropped just one set, the opener against Matsuda.

The final, on the other hand, was a roller coaster. Atmane took the first set in a tie-break, 7-3. Wong, ranked No. 87 before the final according to SBS, answered with 6-3 in the second and levelled the match. The third followed the same script: no decisive break, another tie-break, another nail-biting finish, closed out 11-9 by the Frenchman.

For Wong, from Hong Kong, it is a second straight Challenger final lost, as the South China Morning Post points out. It stings, coming after a match in which he was never really out of contention.

The Seoul title is also the end point of a positive run. In Almaty, an indoor 250, Atmane had beaten Rinky Hijikata 7-6(5) 6-2 in the first round and Mattia Bellucci in the round of 16 after three tie-breaks: 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 7-6(5). He stopped in the quarter-finals against Daniil Medvedev, 6-4 6-4, but the week earned him 50 points.

Before those results, the autumn had been leaner. In Hangzhou, a 250, Atmane went out at the first hurdle against Jaime Faria, 3-6 7-6(9) 6-4. At the Jingshan Challenger 100 he again lost in the first round, to Elias Ymer, 4-6 7-5 5-5 with a retirement, and at the US Open he lost in five sets to Jaume Munar: 6-7(5) 3-6 6-1 7-6(4) 7-5.

The summer, by contrast, had been his best stretch. He reached the round of 16 in Washington (45 points), Montreal and Cincinnati (100 points each), and it was in that period that he hit his career-high ranking, No. 45, on 14 August 2026. From there his ranking slipped, down to No. 90 on the eve of Seoul: that is why the Challenger was worth more than a trophy, it was a climb back up.

Atmane also has a fond memory of Cincinnati from last year: the site's player page shows a 2025 semi-final there, worth 400 points. Those numbers describe a player capable of high peaks but also of stop-start seasons, with Slams and 500 events lacking consistency.

His record at the main tour level, for completed seasons, reads 7 wins and 9 losses in 2025, 2-6 in 2024 and 1-2 in 2023: 10-17 overall, 37 per cent. In his last ten matches, however, he has six wins and four losses, and over the last thirty the balance is perfectly even, 15 won and 15 lost.

Among the most-played rivalries on his page, Medvedev is the toughest opponent: two meetings, two defeats, including the Almaty quarter-final. Against Yoshihito Nishioka the record is 1-2 over three matches, against Marton Fucsovics it is 1-1 over two.

The tight ranking makes the moment even more interesting. Ahead of Atmane are Alex Molcan (No. 72, 797 points) and Rinky Hijikata (No. 73, 793), behind him Pablo Carreno-Busta (No. 75, 773) and Titouan Droguet (No. 76, 771). Between the Frenchman and Carreno-Busta there are 14 points, between him and Hijikata just 6.

And Hijikata, meanwhile, is going strong at the Rolex Paris Masters, where he has knocked out Luciano Darderi and Novak Djokovic (2-6 6-3 6-3) and plays the round of 16 on Thursday against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Every round the Australian wins in Paris makes it harder for Atmane to overtake him. Atmane is not in the Paris draw: in 2025 he lost in the first round there, collecting 25 points.

What happens now? The site does not yet list Atmane's next tournament, but the picture is clear: with 787 points and rivals just a few points away, every end-of-season result can move him up or down a few places. Five Challengers, five times in Asia: as far as passports go, the Frenchman uses his very well there.
