On Monday 26 October the curtain rises on the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, an ATP 500 that awards 500 points to the champion. The field is a mouth-watering one: in the order of play published on our site, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and five Italians take the court on Tuesday.
The first match, though, comes today at 15:00: Tomas Machac against Alex De Minaur. At 17:30 Arthur Fery plays Jacob Fearnley and Jakub Mensik meets Lukas Neumayer. On Tuesday, from 10:00, it is everyone else's turn: thirteen matches complete the opening round.
The roll of honour tells you what kind of week this is. In 2025 Jannik Sinner beat Zverev in the final 3-6 6-3 7-5; in 2024 Jack Draper got past Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-5; in 2023 Sinner outlasted Medvedev 7-6(7) 4-6 6-3. In 2022 the title went to Medvedev himself, who beat Denis Shapovalov 4-6 6-3 6-2, and in 2021 to Zverev, winner over Frances Tiafoe 7-5 6-4.
The points on offer are those of a 500: 500 for the title, 330 for the final, 200 for the semifinal, 100 for the quarterfinal and 50 for the round of 16. For anyone who did well a year ago, Vienna is also a test of nerve, because those points drop off with the 2026 edition: Sinner (title, 500), Zverev (final, 330), De Minaur and Musetti (semifinal, 200 each), then Alexander Bublik, Corentin Moutet, Matteo Berrettini and Tallon Griekspoor, 100 apiece for the quarterfinals.
Sinner is world No.1 with 10,950 points, 880 more than Zverev. Over the next six weeks he has 1,000 points to defend, and Vienna is a big part of that sum. Among the matches our site lists for Monday and Tuesday, however, his name does not appear: we will follow the order of play as it updates.
Zverev, No.2 with 10,070 points, starts on Tuesday against Martin Landaluce. He arrives after a season at the top: he won the US Open, beating Ben Shelton 6-3 7-6(2) 5-7 6-2 in the final, and lost the Wimbledon final to Sinner 6-7(7) 7-6(2) 6-3 6-4. His last match was the Shanghai semifinal, lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 5-7 6-4 6-3. In Vienna he defends the 2025 final, and over the next six weeks he has 400 points to protect.
The most anticipated match on Tuesday may well be Alcaraz against Khachanov. Alcaraz is No.3 with 5,610 points: 4,460 fewer than Zverev and 890 more than Shelton, No.4. He won the title in Tokyo, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4) 6-4, then stopped in the third round in Shanghai, beaten by Zizou Bergs 7-5 7-6(4). Over the next six weeks he has only 50 points to defend.
Khachanov is No.26 with 2,040 points, but he has a leading past in Vienna: he was a finalist in 2024. In Almaty he beat Machac 6-2 4-6 7-6(7) in the round of 16 and lost in the quarterfinals to Bublik 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(5).
Medvedev, No.5 with 3,910 points, opens against Daniel Merida Aguilar. The Russian arrives with the Almaty title, where he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7 6-1 6-3 in the final, and in Vienna he won in 2022 and reached the final in 2023. Merida Aguilar is No.42 with 1,195 points: he has climbed 21 places since 3 August, but he went out at once in Shanghai, beaten by Botic Van De Zandschulp 1-6 6-3 6-4.
Among the Italians, Lorenzo Musetti meets Tiafoe. Musetti is No.24 with 2,120 points, but he has just won the Lyon title: he beat Flavio Cobolli 4-6 6-2 7-5 in the semifinal and Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 in the final. His best ranking is No.13. In Vienna he defends the 2025 semifinal, worth 200 points.
Tiafoe is No.10 with 3,380 points. In New York he reached the semifinal, stopped by Shelton 4-6 6-3 6-3 7-5, while in Shanghai he lost in the third round to Davidovich Fokina 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(6). A higher-ranked opponent, then, but Musetti arrives with the wind at his back.
Cobolli, No.6 with 3,740 points, faces Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian is now No.124 with 472 points and comes from the Saint-Tropez Challenger, where he lost in the third round to Edas Butvilas 7-6(3) 6-3. For Cobolli, beaten by Musetti in Lyon, it is a chance to bounce back straight away.
The Italian line-up is completed by Berrettini against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, with Berrettini having 100 points to defend from the 2025 quarterfinals, and by the all-Italian derby between Luciano Darderi, No.23, and Matteo Arnaldi. One Italian is guaranteed a place in the next round.
Other Tuesday matches include Cameron Norrie against Francisco Cerundolo, Tommy Paul against Andrey Rublev, Griekspoor against Brandon Nakashima, Jurij Rodionov against Basilashvili, Luca Van Assche against Learner Tien and Adrian Mannarino against Ignacio Buse.
Today, meanwhile, it is De Minaur's turn, No.8 with 3,430 points. In Beijing he played the final, won by Novak Djokovic, and in Shanghai he stopped in the quarterfinals against Zverev 6-4 6-4. Machac, No.71 with 804 points, has lost 18 places since 27 July and comes off a defeat to Khachanov in Almaty.
Important ranking positions are at stake in Vienna too: Medvedev, No.5, leads Cobolli, No.6, by 170 points. With 500 points for the title, a good week can quickly redraw that part of the table.
All results, the draw and the order of play can be followed on the tournament page, which updates every hour. We will return to Tuesday's matches as soon as the first verdicts come in from court.
