Roman Safiullin wasted no time in Beijing. The Russian beat Flavio Cobolli, the world number 7, 6-3 6-2 and booked a place in the last 16 of the China Open, an ATP 500 event on the Chinese hard courts. For the player ranked 84th in the official list, it is the biggest win of the week.
The match lasted one hour and 24 minutes. According to reports from Sky Sport and OA Sport, Cobolli, the fourth seed, had three break points in the third game and could not convert them, and Safiullin hit back straight away in the next game. In the second set the Russian built a double-break lead and managed it all the way to 6-2. OA Sport described him as "in a state of grace": hard to argue.
The win shows up immediately in the rankings. In the site's live table Safiullin is at No. 67 with 839 points, while before the tournament he stood at 694, in 84th place. The site shows 145 more points since the start of the tournament and 29 places gained since 13 July 2026. Ahead of him is Fabian Marozsan (No. 66), a single point away, and behind him Ethan Quinn (No. 68), ten points adrift.
The haul can still grow. Every round won in Beijing carries heavy points: 45 for the last 16, 90 for the quarter-finals, 180 for the semi-finals, 300 for the final and 500 for the title. A win in the next round would take Safiullin to 884 points, while a run all the way to the trophy would lift his total to 1,294.
On the other side of the net, the defeat is a step back in the race for the Finals. Cobolli is No. 7 with 3,645 points: Daniil Medvedev (No. 6) is 85 points ahead, while Frances Tiafoe (No. 8) trails by 230. Over the next six weeks the Italian has 170 points to defend, and an opening-match exit does not help build a cushion. The Italian press read it exactly that way, as a blow to his qualification hopes.
Cobolli's 2026 is still a strong one. In 2025 he finished with 28 wins, 26 losses and two titles, and this year he reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati, where he lost to Arthur Fils 6-3 6-4. At the US Open he had beaten Francisco Comesana and Tristan Schoolkate before falling in the third round to Alexander Blockx in four sets. His record over his last ten matches, Beijing included, is five wins and five defeats.
Safiullin, by contrast, arrives in form. He is 29, born on 7 August 1997, and in 2025 he finished with eight wins and 17 losses, with no titles, on the main tour. Overall, between 2021 and 2025, he won 42 of 102 matches (41%), with no titles and one final. Those numbers show how uneven his path has been, and how significant the recent climb is.
The 2026 season has already given him a few flashes. At Wimbledon he reached the last 16, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets, 7-6(6) 6-3 3-6 6-3, taking one set off him: that result earned him 200 ranking points. At the US Open he drew Carlos Alcaraz in the first round and lost 6-4 6-4 6-4, while in Winston-Salem he went out in the second round against Hugo Grenier. At the Cancun Challenger 125 he reached the quarter-finals, beating Sebastian Ofner and then losing to Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-3.
The real signal came in Hangzhou. At the Chinese 250 Safiullin beat Fajing Sun 6-2 6-0 in the third round, then Quentin Halys in the last 16 by 5-7 6-3 6-4 and Bu Yunchaokete in the quarter-finals with a clean 6-3 6-3. In the semi-finals he lost 7-5 6-4 to Medvedev, who went on to win the title by beating Andrey Rublev in the final. That week was worth 100 points to him.
With the win over Cobolli, Safiullin has won four of his last five matches, all on Chinese hard courts. The site puts his last 30 matches at 13 wins and 17 losses, a balance of minus four that recent weeks are already correcting. Over the last ten he is dead level, five wins and five defeats.
Between Safiullin and Cobolli there was only one previous meeting, and this is it: the 6-3 6-2 in Beijing. The site's head-to-head page therefore shows 1-0 to the Russian. Against Medvedev the count is 0-1 after the Hangzhou semi-final. The Russian's longest rivalries are with Alexei Popyrin, whom he leads 3-1 over four meetings, and with Djokovic and Holger Rune, both 0-4.
Meanwhile the China Open keeps moving. The tournament began on 28 September and has 28 players in the draw from 17 countries. So far 14 matches have been played, with five tie-breaks and five matches going to a deciding set. The longest was Andrey Rublev against Tallon Griekspoor, which finished 6-4 5-7 7-6(6) after 35 games.
The rest of the draw is not standing still. The site shows three Russian players still in the last 16. Djokovic beat Nuno Borges 6-3 7-6(2), Alexander Zverev got past Cameron Norrie 7-6(1) 6-4, Hubert Hurkacz beat Learner Tien 5-7 6-3 6-4 and Karen Khachanov eliminated Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 6-3.
The tournament has a clear identity. In 2025 the title went to Jannik Sinner, who beat Learner Tien 6-2 6-2 in the final; in 2024 Carlos Alcaraz won in three sets over Sinner, 6-7(6) 6-4 7-6(3), while in 2023 Sinner triumphed again against Medvedev, 7-6(2) 7-6(2). This year Sinner is not here, the field is more open, and anyone who finds a week of confidence can take advantage.
The same goes for points: Tien, the 2025 finalist, had 300 at stake, De Minaur and Medvedev 180 each for last year's semi-finals. Safiullin, on the other hand, collected 10 points for the third round and the tournament does not appear on his 2025 record: every extra win is a net gain. It is the luxury of playing as an outsider.
So what happens now? Safiullin awaits his last-16 opponent with 45 points on offer for the round and the chance to go further. More than the numbers, confidence matters: beating a top-10 player in two sets on hard courts is a calling card that carries weight. The hard part, as always, is repeating it.
For Cobolli, the road to the Finals runs through the coming weeks. With 170 points to defend and tight competition among the top ten, he will need to rediscover consistency quickly. The season is long and Beijing is, for now, a bump in the road. For Safiullin it could be the start of something bigger: the draw will soon tell how much.
